“What Goes Around…” is a romantic comedy that centers on Talal, a young man with commitment problems. After growing tired of his girlfriend’s worrisome ways, he gets the itch to see what else is out there. But after spending time with an attractive classmate (Angela), he soon realizes that everything that glitters isn’t gold.

The movie was filmed entirely in Memphis and was directed by local filmmaker Rod Pitts (www.pittstopproductions.com) and written by Nazeeh Majeed. A large cast of local talent appears in this feature-length film.

With songs like “One Day at a Time”, “Thingy Thing” and “Party”, the new album is packed with happy times for those who appreciate this artist’s innovative style. Rod Pitts takes Li'l Film Fest prize

LiveFromMemphis.com held its first (we hope) quarterly Li'l Film Festival Saturday at the MeDiA Co-op. The audience voted for its favorite and the winner was Rod Pitts' "Imagine." The short film starring Shantrece Williams centers around a woman cursed by her dreams. The cast also features April Hale, Learyn Wilde, Kim Skipper, Jayson Dancy, Morris Chism, and Markus Seaberry. Additional Crew includes: De'Anasi, Tenell Pitts, Nazeeh Majeed, Keenon Nikita, Leon Berry, and Cameran Michael. Rod is also director of photograpy for "Just the Two of Us," an indie by Keenon Nikita that's screening April 3 at the Malco Studio.

Sarah Fleming of LFM says: "Thanks to all who came out to support our Li'l Film Fest, and thanks again to all the filmmakers who participated - it was an excellent program with a really great turnout! Christopher Reyes: "My Memphis"

Nice story in the CA on local filmmaker Christopher Reyes -- of LiveFromMemphis.com -- and the upcoming screening of his film, "My Memphis."

Screening is Wednesday at Malco Paradiso at 5:30 p.m. and Craig Brewer will introduce the film.

"My Memphis," a film directed and produced by artist Christopher Reyes, uses Wild Bill's -- a legendary blues bar at Vollintine and Avalon -- and an assortment of people, places and things to do to recruit young professionals to Memphis -- an effort that is becoming increasingly important as cities compete to attract talent.

"The cool thing about this is we didn't script this," said Reyes, the creator of Live from Memphis, a popular Web site devoted mostly to the local music scene. "We just set the cameras up and people told us what they liked about Memphis."

You may not know that the film's digital video debut has inspired the release of several related movies on DVD, alongside the coincidental appearance of other films with a local or Tennessee connection.

Comic shorts by African-American filmmakers, documentaries about a pair of died-too-young objects of cult adoration (Elvis and Jeff Buckley) and some of the most acclaimed international films of recent years are among the highlights of the 7th annual Memphis International Film Festival, which continues today through Sunday on two screens at Malco's Studio on the Square, 2105 Court at Overton Square.

Some 60 narrative features, documentaries, shorts, classics and animated and experimental films will be screened during the event, which is organized as a labor of love by volunteers with the not-for-profit Memphis Film Forum...

Is it evidence of a thriving local film community or just coincidence? Either way, supporters of independent cinema have plenty of choices to make this week.

Want to watch Baptist Hospital implode, again and again? Who doesn't? That's the idea behind the extremely entertaining "Lil' Film Fest," a theme-based mini-festival presented by Live from Memphis, a Web site (livefrommemphis.com) that offers extraordinary locally produced shorts and music videos. The hourlong mini-fest will showcase 13 short films -- ranging from 57 seconds to a few minutes in length -- that each incorporate footage from the Nov. 6 early-morning demolition of Union Avenue's Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Produced by Rusted Sun Films, the new made-in-Memphis feature "Divine Manipulation of the Threads" gets a four-day booking Monday through Thursday at the Studio on the Square (filling the no-budget indie void left by the International Film Festival, which ends Sunday).

A sort of combination of "Ocean's Eleven" and "Reservoir Dogs," "Divine Manipulation" -- named for a phrase in Sun-Tzu's "The Art of War" -- represents a Hulk-length leap in quality over Rusted Sun's previous films "The Visitor" and "A Cowboy's Silver Lining," both of which achieved some success on the local festival circuit.

Filmmaker Christopher Reyes -- the mastermind behind Live from Memphis -- debuts his 45-minute film "My Memphis" at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Malco's Paradiso.

'Just the Two of Us' one more time!

If you missed last week's premiere screening of Keenon Nikita's new film Just the Two of Us, mark you calendars for April 3, 7 p.m. at the Malco Studio on the Square. Be there!

1st Wednesday is that splendid monthly event at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art that offers a great mix of art and entertainment.

The next one up is Wednesday, April 5 from 6 - 9 p.m. There are gallery tours at 6:30 and 7 of the exhibition "Maxfield Parrish: Master of Make-Believe" at 6:30 & 7 p.m.

Throughout the evening you'll hear live music by singer/songwriter Candice Ivory.

And, film lovers, you can see "Act One," which recently ended a two week run at Malco Studio, so if you fiddled around and missed it, here's your chance again. The film, you remember won the Hometown Award at the 2005 Indie Memphis Film Fest, and there will be an introduction by director Brad Ellis. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

Character Description: Hunter, A 15- to 18-year-old white male with short hair...skinny as a rail. He is from a lower middle class family...he listens to hip-hop and wears baggy clothes. He works as a dishwasher at a local bar, and walks everywhere with his friend, Drew.

Actor is not required to have previous experience acting, but must be able to express himself emotionally...with both anger and sadness.

From imdb.com: Members of Oscar-winning musical group Three 6 Mafia are 'pimping out' their Oscar around Los Angeles in order to gain access to the hottest nightclubs. The rappers, who won Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" from the movie Hustle & Flow, have made their Oscar statuette an official member of their entourage. The rap group rolled up to hot spot Lobby last Thursday and were told only four people would be allowed per table, because the club was already crowded. One of the group's members pulled the statue out of a paper bag and asked, "This little man count?" A source tells American publication Us Weekly, "Mr. Oscar sat on prime club real-estate, neatly placed on the centre of the group's table, surrounded by gazers observing that glowing complexion in awe."

The premiere showings have been rescheduled for Friday, Mar. 17 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Muvico.

"Southern Comfort" will be shot over 15 days in the Memphis area, with locations that include Beale Street, the riverfront and other areas that capture what executive producer Ken Topolsky described as the "romance" of Memphis.

'Divine Manipulation of the Threads'

Rusted Sun Films is proud to present the premiere of Divine Manipulation of the Threads at Malco Studio on the Square March 27th-30th. A four-day stretch at a major theater is quite an honor for a no-budget independent film made purely with dreams and determination. It also speaks to the movie's professional quality.

This is the second feature for the homegrown production group. Their previous movie, "A Cowboy’s Silver Lining," received top billing at film festivals across the county. It made history as the Indie Memphis Film Festival's first ever sell-out -- 293 people packed the theater. "Divine Manipulation of the Threads" promises to create the same buzz.

“Have you ever wanted to slam someone’s face with a waffle iron, just so you can hear the satisfying crunch as they go limp from the searing pain?” That’s just a taste of the quips and twists this dark comedy takes. "Divine Manipulation of the Threads" is a clever dialog-driven film about a bank heist that will that keep you laughing and guessing until the credits.

The 87-minute movie stars a cast of 37 Memphis actors and several downtown businesses. The production quality is astounding -- this looks nothing like an independent. One of the scenes was even shot in 3-D. This is another example of why you will be shocked to learn Rusted Sun Films did it all with no money! The “MacGyver-esque” production company even built their own high tech gear to get the job done. Everything from the steady camera to 17-foot camera boom are homemade concoctions.

Make a movie poster

The Orpheum Theatre is pleased to announce the 2006 Summer Movie Series Poster Design Contest. Participants are asked to design a movie series poster to showcase the two (2) summer movie series that will be featured during the Orpheum’s 2006 series. Guidelines for the design:

* The poster should showcase both sub series “Classics" and "Cult Classics"
* The dimensions of the poster must be 16” or 18” wide X 24” tall

Keenon Nikita's 'Just the Two of Us' on Thursday

Thursday is the premiere screening of "Just the Two of Us," an indie film shot in Memphis and directed and written by Keenon Nikita. This autobiographical film examines the relationship between Nikita's character, Nic Peoples, and his daughter, Ashley.

The movie was filmed with no budget, but a lot of heart. "It's taken me two and a half years to complete," Nikita says. "Scraping up cash from here and there, most times getting really big locations on my charm alone."

The film stars Nikita, Selina Nell Haley, Michael Travis Stone, Glenda Pannell and several other Memphis actors. Rod Pitts of Pittstop Productions (http://www.pittstopproductions.com/) is cinematographer.

Nikita, who played a smooth car thief in Craig Brewer's first full-length feature "The Poor & Hungry," says the movie is a modern day "Kramer vs. Kramer." His character raises his daughter until she's 8 years old when she goes back to her mother. Father and daughter both think this arrangement is for the best until they realize that everything they wanted they already had in each other.

The one-time screening is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16 at Muvico at Peabody Place. Admission is $10. The cast will greet moviegoers and sign posters prior to the show; an after-party will be held at Isaac Hayes Music Food Passion.

From 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nikita will be a guest on "The Bev Johnson Show" on WDIA 1070-AM to talk about the movie.

Here is a note from Nashville Film Folks regarding the General Assembly's consideration of incentives to bring filmmakers to Tennessee.

There are relatively few Memphis names listed on the Tennessee Film-Television Coalition site. You can remedy that. Read the following, go to the link and indicate your support.


Legislation to incentivize more film and television in the state of Tennessee is currently being lobbied for. Bills have been filed and are currently being amended in critical ways before going to committee in both Senate and House, where they will be vetted every which way possible. A lot will happen, one way or the other, within the next few weeks, and nothing can be taken for granted.

If you care about more film and television being made in Tennessee, your e-mail support will be needed at a handful of critical junctures - and one of them is now. Please go to:

The festival will have a definitive musical influence in addition to the opening night film with screenings of AMAZING GRACE: JEFF BUCKLEY and ALTERED BY ELVIS. Both documentary films that examine the lives of two legendary musical influences who made a great impact in Memphis and the world. Films of regional interest include the locally produced feature DAMMI IL LA, an Italian film with screenplay by Memphis Sarah Ledbetter, CHALK by former Memphian Mike Akel, and RICHARD JOHNSTON: HILL COUNTRY TROUBADOUR.

This year’s International Masters Screenings include:
LA PROMESSE - an extremely powerful film by the Dardenne brothers, a tersely lyrical piece about the abuses of illegal immigrant workers in Belgium.
MOOLAADE - Ousamane Sembene's film deals with women's rights issues, specifically the phenomenon of female circumcision in some African cultures.
BEAU TRVAIL – Claire Denis' masterwork re-working of Melville's "Billy Budd".
CLAIRE DOLAN - Lodge Kerrigan's film about a woman whose knowledge of men encompasses everything except how to trust them and find happiness with them.
WEEKEND - Jean-Luc Goddard’s impressive plateau of film originality, incorporating inter-titles, extended tracking shots, and music to add an entirely new grammar to film language.
QUITTING(Zuotian) - Zhang Yang's gutsy film that tackles a real-life tale of drug addiction, mental illness, family conflict and the downside of fame, using a cast of characters who are pretty much recreating their own experiences.

Individual screenings are $7 per person based on first come, first served seating with Festival Passholders receiving priority seating at all festival events – Opening Night tickets are $10 per person. Festival passes which allow priority seating to all film screenings and seminars are $35 in advance and can be purchased by calling 901-626-9685. The festival is presented by the Memphis Film Forum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to
the promotion of education, economic development, and cultural diversity through the cinema arts. Scheduling info to come later, but here's an alphabetical listing of the Memphis International Film Festival selections just announced. The festival will kick off on Thursday, March 23, at Malco’s Paradiso Theatre with a VIP Opening Night Reception where filmmakers and film-lovers will come together to celebrate the 7 year anniversary. Films will continue to be screened Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Malco’s Studio On The Square. The Memphis International Film Festival celebrates the best of local and global filmmaking; screening features, shorts, foreign, documentaries, experimental, and animation. Each year the festival draws an average of 40 filmmakers from across the world to Memphis to screen their films and attend the festival.

FILM/TV INCENTIVES LEGISLATION ­ PROGRESS REPORT

Eight [8] bills have been filed in the Senate and House for
legislation to create more film and television production activity
in the state of Tennessee. The bill language is based upon [and
would not be possible without] the Film and Television Production
Study done by the Tennessee Film Entertainment and Music Commission.
In essence, there is actually one primary bill with eleven sections,
and there is a duplicate of that bill in both the House and Senate
[i.e., 2 of the 8 bills]. Then there are essentially three other
bills which break out specific sections of the primary bill, and
there are duplicates of those bills in both House and Senate [i.e.,
the remaining 6 of the 8 bills]. No matter how you slice it, the 11
sections currently deal with:

1] Proposed name of the bill ­ The Visual Content Act of 2006
2] Film production permits to be filed with the Tennessee Film
Entertainment and Music Commission
3] Sales tax rebate for any out-of-state or in-state production
spending at least $500,000 in Tennessee
4] and 5] Breaks on purchase of film production and post-production
equipment
6] Very significant tax breaks for incentivizing major out-of-state
productions
7] Development of technical film production training in order to
deepen Tennessee production crew base
8] A formal study to bring more video game industry to Tennessee
9], 10] and 11] Generic language pertaining to passage of any
legislation.

A coalition including the city film offices of Memphis, Nashville,
Knoxville and Chattanooga, along with IA 492, Teamsters, business
leaders, TIPTOE [East Tennessee film org] and FilmNashville have
come together to lobby legislators at two critical junctures in the
legislative process:

A] The bills will go to the Ways and Means Committee of both the
Senate and the House, where all sections cited above will be vetted
and analyzed for financial impact;

B] If the bills make it out of committee, meaning they are approved
by a majority of committee members, they will be brought up for a
vote in both the Senate and House.

It will be during both A] and B] above that the legislation will
need the strong support of all film businesses, individuals,
organizations, and ancillary business leaders, where that support
will need to be conveyed through positive e-mails, letters and phone
calls.

IMPORTANT: Since the language of the bills is still currently being
defined and in some areas corrected, it is premature to contact
anyone in Tennessee government about the bills. The language needs
to be perfect and locked before massive support is shown, otherwise
legislators will become confused as to what is actually being
supported. We will advise as to specific legislators to communicate
with at junctures A] and B], and will provide all relevant contact
info for those legislators at those times.

NASHVILLE FILMMAKERS SECTION AT BELCOURT

FilmNashville and the Belcourt Theatre are joining forces to create
a section at the Belcourt Theatre that will sell videos and DVDs of
features, shorts, documentaries, and television programming made by
Nashville filmmakers. Revenues will be split by the filmmakers and
the Belcourt, with majority of profits going to the filmmakers.

As a non-profit community center for many film screenings and
events, including the 48 Hour Film Project and Awards Ceremony, the
Belcourt will be a natural gathering place to display and sell
locally made indie films. If you are a filmmaker interested in
selling your work at the Nashville Filmmakers section at the

FILM FUNDING FOR DOCUMENTARIES WORKSHOP

On March 25, 2006 FilmNashville Director of Development, Bobbie
Gallup, will lead an all-day workshop at the Watkins Film School on
fundraising and grantwriting for documentaries, including the
realities of what one is up against when going after funding, and
how to successfully navigate those waters. Ms. Gallup has raised
several million dollars in grant monies in her career for various
non-profit endeavors, and is a wealth of knowledge in the process.

HGTV NEEDS HOMES FOR NEW TV SHOW

Home and Garden Television's (HGTV's), "ReZoned", will begin
shooting new season immediately.

HGTV's new show "ReZoned" is looking for homeowners that had the
vision and creativity to convert a non-residence into a residence.
ONLY HOMEOWNERS THAT WERE INVOLVED IN THE ORIGINAL CONVERSION WILL
BE CONSIDERED. We consider structures such as boathouses,firehouses,
banks, drug stores or just about anything else you can imagine.

Ideal candidates will include the following:

Remarkable Transformations: We're looking for interesting and
inspiring transformations that are COMPLETE or nearly completed. It
is important that some elements from the original purpose remain or
are incorporated. For example, one show featured a church that was
transformed into a single family home complete with furniture
constructed from the original pews.

Enthusiastic Homeowners: Homeowners should be passionate about their
home and the possibility of sharing it with our audience. We focus
on their PERSONAL stories of design, renovation and life in the new
home.

Before Photos, Videos or Documents: Because the renovations we
feature are complete, we would like to show the building before and
hopefully during the transformation. Home videos, archival photos,
simple snap shots and supporting documents are all welcome.
The goal for this series is to tell the story of the building, the
renovation, the homeowner and how they are all related.
