Alley, the featured painter for the Memphis In May fine art poster, was born in Memphis, TN, and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Memphis. In addition to being an artist, she is Director of Public Art at the UrbanArt Commission and pivot for the Legion of Zoom of the Memphis Roller Derby League. She also sketches, makes lists, reads, shows her paintings regularly at Perry Nicole Fine Art, and most recently created the artwork for the 2007 Memphis in May Fine Art Poster honoring Spain.

Artist Statement
Ordinarily my paintings are informed by the people and places most familiar to me – family and friends, or interesting shadows on old Memphis buildings. For this exhibit I stepped out of my comfort zone to offer viewers an exploration of unfamiliar territory. By depicting the small details and intense colors of a foreign country, and by portraying an audacious segment of society, these paintings feel a little off-balance and suspect. The way I’ve painted them, with acrylic and a little bit of oil on gessoed paper, as opposed to oil on canvas, forced less time and obsession spent on each image, and allows for a focus on the whole, rather than the individual pieces.

Daybreak in the red-light district of a Spanish town. Someone who earns a living on the streets makes the trek home, sits down, and begins removing make-up. A celluloid tribute to the homosexual artistes of the late 1970s, just after Franco’s dictatorship. Sundance 2005 and Winner of the Teddy Award Best Short Film at the Berlin Film Festival.

Natural Route (La Ruta Natural) Àlex Pastor 2004 11 min
One of the most internationally acclaimed Spanish short films of the year, including the best short film award at the Sundance Film Festival and Spanish Academy Award nomination, young Alex Pastor shows us his innovative perspective on time and life. Divad wakes up after an accident to find himself lost. His home, his wife... everything is unknown to him. Maybe the answers he needs lie in the past.

The Fence (El cerco) Ricardo Íscar, Nacho Martín, 2005, 12 min
The best European short film award at the Berlin Film Festival went to this striking and brutal student thesis. It’s the same gory ritual, every summer. Thousands of migrating tuna fish crowd into the Mediterranean on their way through the Strait of Gibraltar. This films has been the only selected short
film at the Sundance Film Festival 2007.

The Body Against (Contracuerpo) Eduardo Chapero-Jackson 17 min 2005 A young woman obsessed with her image takes a journey into the labyrinth of her own perception, turning her body into a prison for the world to see and living the self-destructive dream of becoming what she is not. This incredible sensitive film premiered at the Venezia International Film Festival, and many more followed to that, proving Eduardo as a Spanish filmmaker to watch.

One Too Many (Eramos Pocos) Borja Cobeaga 2005 16 min
When his wife leaves him, Joaquín turns to his son to help him bring his mother-in-law out of a home to do the housework. This hilarious film has gotten the 2007 Oscar® Nomination by the Academy of Motion pictures Arts and Sciences

Binta and the Great Idea (Binta y la gran idea) Javier Fesser, 2004, 30 min
As part of a collaborative initiative with Unicef, in which Spain’s most notable filmmakers offer their insight and perspective into the lives and minds of children all over the world, this uplifting episode by the highly acclaimed Fesser (Mortadelo & Filemon: The Big Adventure, The Miracle of P. Tinto) takes us to the heart of Africa, where little Binta lives with his intuitive father. This film has received the 2007 Oscar® Nomination by the Academy of Motion pictures Arts and Sciences

The Artist Studio Visit program is designed to introduce the public to artists living and working in Memphis and provides a behind-the-scenes look at their environment, their process, and a preview (in this case, review) of their new work. The program includes a light reception and discussion with the artist in her studio at 1894 York Ave.

Last Train To Memphis May schedule

Next month marks one year of LTTM's Shorts Fest, and we have had a wild ride. Did you miss episodes 1-11? Not to worry, you can check them out at the main library. We are slowly but surely burning DVDs of each episode and making them available through the newly created Memphis Film Collection on the fourth floor of the main library. Also check out other films made here in the Mid-South.

This month's edition of the fest includes a wide variety of films. From a fairy tale to another installment of the Necktie Trilogy and ending it all with local speed metal band, Cult of the Flag. Our host for this month is the Man of Memphis and the South, David Tankersley. Be sure to tune in!

Grim Sweeper: Got your tix yet?

The Memphis indie film Grim Sweeper will play at Malco's Studio on the Square in Midtown Memphis on Thursday April 19th.

Here's Beifuss on the upcoming screening and a short interview with Edward Valibus Phillips.

This was screened at last year's Indie Memphis Film Festival and the place was packed. It's a highly entertaining feature by a group of University of Memphis grads and well worth your time. And I'm not saying this just because I'm in it.


There will be TWO screenings that night.

Highland - Walker Spring Fest

The 2007 Highland - Walker Spring Fest is closing Walker Street for the 3rd year this Saturday (April 21). The Festival will have 8 Live Bands on the Main Stage. The free, open to the public event starts @ noon and goes till 11 pm. University District local businesses invite you to show your True Blue, Tiger Spirit, come enjoy lunch and dinner in our district restaurants and, browse our local shops. Special events will be scheduled through out the day so, bring your family and friends.
